What is laser hair removal?

How many laser hair removal treatment would I need?

For this particular hair removal treatment, you would need between 6 to 12 treatments. One of our practitioners will sit with you during your consultation to pin down the exact amount of treatments you will need. After your treatments, some hair follicles will never grow back, as these follicles did a great job at absorbing the laser. However, some follicles will grow back after a period of time, this may be down to hormonal changes as our body changes with age. Any regrowth you do have will be much finer than before and lighter in colour (pigment).

 

Why do I need so many treatments?

When you begin your laser hair removal treatment, our practitioner will target the area where hair growth is regular. The treatment will then continue to break down other follicles around the area, while also getting rid of any potential follicles. Targeting potential follicles will occur towards the end of your treatment, to ensure you get the best results. To achieve the best results, completing the treatment is very important. You may even require less sessions than you think, so during  your consultation, you can go into more depth with one of our practitioner.

 

What about facial hair removal?

There are many options for facial hair removal, for instance waxing, bleaching or threading; all of which can be very harsh on your skin, especially if you are prone to skin irritation or sensitivity. Amazingly, facial hair removal treatment with a laser is safe and achieves great results by effectively reducing hair on your face, neck or hairline.

Due to the heat used with laser hair removal, the temperature is always reduced when treating sensitive areas like your face. While going through your treatment, please do not tweeze, wax, pluck, or thread any hairs, this is to make sure that you do not remove the hair from the follicles the laser will need to target at your next visit.

Important information on the FDA for beauty products

The news came in good time, as we all know that the beauty industry doesn’t have the strictest regulations, so we are always unsure of what is actually in the products that we use on a daily basis. The great news is that change has begun and we may now have more clarity around product ingredients.

Senators Dianne Feinstein and Susan Collins proposed the Personal Care Products Safety Act, a bill in America that would give the FDA more authority to regulate the production of beauty products. This seems especially necessary after news came out some months ago that Johnson & Johnson has been ordered to pay $110.5 million after a 65 year old woman claimed to have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer after using their baby powder.

“Americans use a variety of personal care products daily, and they should be able to know whether the products that they are applying to their hair or skin are safe," said Senator Collins in a statement. “By updating FDA oversight of the ingredients in cosmetics and personal care products for the first time in nearly 80 years, our legislation will help increase safety for consumers, protect small businesses, and provide regulatory certainty for manufacturers.” 

The bill would give the FDA the ability to do things like recall questionably safe beauty products, require ingredient information online as well as on labels and issue regulations on Good Manufacturing Practices.

One of the best parts is, many major beauty companies are completely on board including Revlon, Estée Lauder, Unilever, Procter & Gamble and L’Oréal.

You’re probably wondering how to promote healthier skin by what you eat on a daily basis? What works and what doesn’t? Well here is a list of some of the amazing foods you may want to consume to boost the glow and reduce acne breakouts in your skin.

 

Water – drink lots of it

This is by far the most important on my list, you cannot live without it and there is a great reason why. Our body is made up of 50-75% water, so it is naturally a requirement for us to sustain a healthy body. Drinking your daily intake of water (8 glasses per day), but studies have shown that it’s best to follow your bodies requirement and stop when you feel as though you’ve had enough. Water keeps your skin moist, which makes any fine lines or wrinkles less noticeable. It is also great for expelling any toxins that should not be in the body, while improving your blood flow and giving you softer, brighter skin.

 

Antioxidants in fruits and vegetables

We all need and want healthy cells, because without them or even when our cells are weakened, our bodies become more susceptible to cardiovascular diseases and certain types of cancer. Therefore, it’s very important to top up on antioxidants, such as vitamin C, vitamin E and carotenoids. These help to protect our healthy cells from free radicals, that can cause a lot of damage.

You can find antioxidants in fruits and vegetables, for instance, berries, apricots, squash, spinach, tangerines, sweet potatoes, peppers, beets, beans etc. The more you eat the better, so try to add a little in each meal or snack on them in between your main meals. You honestly can’t eat enough and if you do, your body will naturally store as much as it can for days you don’t eat as much and get rid of the excess.

 

Vitamin C

During the summertime, the sun can have adverse effects on our skin, so with the aid of vitamin C, you will be able to give your skin added protection. The great thing about vitamin C is its ability to reduce sun damage to your collagen and the elastin in your skin, while firming your skin at the same time. The amazing properties in vitamin C makes it an important addition to promoting healthy skin. By eating kiwis, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, red peppers, citrus fruits or and papayas, you will be giving your body the nutrients it needs to create healthier cells.

 

Eat more nuts, seeds and oils

There is no magic to this unfortunately, it’s all about eating right. When you consume more nuts, vegetable oils, seeds, olives, asparagus and leafy greens (spinach/kale), you are helping your skin fight sun damage and inflammation, due to their vitamin E properties. Vitamin E also helps to fight aging by blocking free radicals from your body. By fighting free radicals, we are naturally creating a process that reduces aging, simply by what we eat.

 

Not all fats are bad – so eat the good ones

Who doesn’t want to know the full list of every food that contains good fats? The great thing is they are in the kind of food you can eat daily. For instance, salmon, mackerel, olives, walnuts, canola oils, sardines and flaxseeds. These contain Omega-3s and omega-6s, which are good fats that makes up your skin natural oil barrier. Increasing the amount of good fats every week will reduce dryness and acne, leaving your skin naturally smoother and younger looking.

The better you eat, the better your entire body will function, which means you will in-turn have healthier, brighter and softer skin. Eating healthy is most certainly a lifestyle choice, rather than fad diets, so take your time to implement daily changes to increase your overall health.

You are as good as the skin you’re in – well that’s how the quote goes! However you’ll find that a majority of adults, post adolescence seem to have an issue with their skin.

If it isn’t those ever so resistant black heads, it’s ingrown hairs or the amount of oils causing you to have a cluster of spots, let’s not forget the current climate and it’s ability to dry all glow out of your face.

It honestly takes time, experimenting and knowing the skin you wear to find effective and enriching ways to having better skin.

 

1 – Firstly, you need to know your skin type, just like the follicles on your scalp – we all have different skin; some products can work for your bestie but doesn’t work for you, don’t be discouraged, in time you’ll find what your skin adores and what it resents.

2 – There’s roughly five different skin types: Oily Skin, Sensitive Skin, Normal Skin, Dry Skin and Anti-Aging Skin.

3 – Find your skin type:

Oily Skin: Produces excess oil, occasional blemishes, may have acne breakouts.

Sensitive Skin: Tends to burn easily, constant redness, reactions to many skincare products.

Normal Skin: Common skin type, not too dry or oil, needs regular maintenance.

Dry Skin: Experiences dryness on regular basis, may have tightness and discomfort.

Anti-Ageing Skin: Needs intensive nutrients, may have sun damage, fine lines and/or wrinkles.

 

What type of skin do you have?

4 – Shopping: When creating your skincare regimen you’ll need to make different products or head down to your favourite beauty and cosmetic shop to bag yourself these six skincare must-haves.

Your must-haves should include: a cleanser, exfoliator, toner and treatment, moisturiser and masque.

5 – Decide whether you want a natural skincare journey or product based one. Different skin types react differently so don’t forget to experiment.

6 – Always read what’s in your skincare products: Avoid like the plague – Parabens, Synthetic Colours, Fragrance (sometimes fragrance can’t be avoided but for sensitive skin avoid, avoid, avoid), phthalates, sulphates (SLS or SLES / Sodium lauryl sulphate), formaldehyde or any sunscreen chemicals.

7 – Not only are you as good as the skin you’re in – you are what you eat and your skin and gut work side by side.

8 – Drink more than 1.5 litres of water per day – you need to hydrate your skin from within.

9 – Nelly Furtado sang that she was like a bird, well you’ll be swimming like a fish as the omega 3 stored in fish such as Salmon, Tuna and Sardines will help to restore your skins natural glow and overall smooth presence.

10 – Try water-based hair products, you’ll be surprised how much your hair affects your skin; conditioners, gels, waxes and creams all contain oils that clog pores – especially on the forehead.

11 – Rub your face, weekly! Yes give yourself a weekly facial massage, smooth away those lines and wrinkles; become your own spa-saviour.

12 – Make your own face masks; not only is this a fun option, with finding new ways to care for your skin you’ll naturally become an expert through research and experimenting.

  • The Berry –

Combine 1 Tablespoon crushed rip blueberries, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1 tablespoon cucumber juice (literally blend a cucumber, without skin) 2 tablespoons baking soda and 2 tablespoons water.

Let that sit on your face for 15 – 20 minutes and rinse off with warm water.

 

14 – Always remember that your skin isn’t just your face – your entire body needs love and upkeep, check out this amazing body smoother.

  • The Yen –

Mix 1/2 cup ground rice (grind in a blender/ Nutribullet), 1/2 cup coconut milk, 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1 & 1/2 tablespoon ground ginger – this should form a paste.

Use your hands to rub in a circular motion all over your body.

Scrub and rinse after five minutes.

 

15 – If you’ve got Honey, Almond, Butter, Shea butter, Turmeric, Rose water or Rolled oats in your house – you’re laughing and can definitely make a few cool facial masks.

16 – Cut out the white carbs and white sugars – for better skin, eat wholewheat and brown. Your skin is your bodies largest organ, rashes and reactions all come from within.

17 – Get those pears out – avocados are not only amazing to eat but also externally you can treat your skin and fulfil your appetite at the same time.

18 – Create a skincare regimen – organisation is a must in this day and age, you need a haircare regimen, workout plan, meal planner and now introducing the skincare regimen, if you pencil it in amongst all your other activities you’ll be laughing and glowing.

19 – Sleep, it’s difficult to get a full eight hours sleep but it’s important for your skin to get as much sleep as possible in one night – this allows for it to repair and replenish.

20 – Not everyday makeup, avoid foundations and concealers during the summer time, this blocks your pores but also suppresses your skin from sun exposure, which is both a blessing and a curse; who really want’s a tanned body and a white head forming, untanned face?

21 – Know your cleanser, you should go for a non soap cleanser as it helps to replace the moisture barrier in the skin – see it as prevention.  The best cleansers are Sage & Grapefruit, Almond Milk and Cantaloupe Melon.

22 – Exfoliators, you should only need to exfoliate 2- 3 times per week; it’s best to use Oatmeal, Sea Salt, Brown Sugar, Honey and Natural Yogurt.

23 –  Using a toner is most probably the most vital part of skincare, but most people don’t realise that cleaning and toning go hand int hand.

 

The best natural toners are found in your kitchen – if you can’t digest it you shouldn’t put it on your skin! Try these out: 

Apple Cider Vinegar & Water

Mint Leaves & Boiling Water

Lemon Juice and Peppermint Tea

Aloe Vera Leaf and Cucumber

Apply to face using cotton wool.

24 – You should know your skin type at this point – do you moisturise? It’s very important for the hydration and elasticity of the skin, it’s always helpful to go for a water-based and natural oil moisturiser for your skin, especially your face.

25 – Get dirty – if only once in your life, immerse yourself in a mud and clay skin masque that will relax your pores, rehydrate you and literally kiss the life back into your skin.
